Not at all, in fact the word Covenant means agreement. The Old Covenant (Old Agreement) and New Covenant (New Agreement) is on the law (Torah). Without the law (Torah) there would be no New Covenant (New Agreement) because there would be nothing to agree on. The Messiah Himself, said that He did not come to destroy the Torah, but to complete it.
Think not that I am come to abolish the Torah or the prophets, I have not come to abolish but to fulfill. (HRV Matthew 5:17)
Do not think that I came to destroy the Torah or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to complete. (ISR Mattithyahu 5:17)
In other words the Messiah came to add to the law, it was not complete at the time. Let me give an example in the scripture here concerning murder.
But I tell you that whoever shall be enraged against his brother, he will be condemned to the council of the synagogue. And whoever says to him, 'You impious one', he will be condemned to the fire of Gey Hennom. (HRV Matthew 5:22)
"But I say to you whoever is wroth with his brother without a cause shall be laible to judgement. And whoever says to his brother, 'Raka!' shall be liable to the Sanhedrin. But whoever says, 'you fool!' shall be liable to fire of Gehenna. (ISR Mattithyahu 5:22)
Does that sound like the Messiah was taking away the law or adding to it? Remember that in the past one would have to physically murder someone to be guilty of this sin. Let me give another example concerning adultery.
but I tell you, that whoever sees a woman and covets her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. (HRV Matthew 5:28)
"But I say to you that everyone looking at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. (ISR Mattithyahu 5:28)
Let me clear another thing up, some say that "the law was hammered to the cross" Yes the law regarding animal sacrifice was hammered to the stake with the Master Yahshua the Messiah, He was our final sacrifice for our sins but He, Himself had this to say about the Commandments.
And in this we perceive that we know him, if we keep his commandments. For he who says, I know him, and does not keep his commandments, is a liar and the truth is not in him. But he who keeps his word, in this one thuely the love of Eloah is accomplished, for this we that we are in him. He who says, I am in him ought to conduct himself according to his conduct. (HRV 1st John 2:3-6)
And by this we know that we know Him, if we guard His commands. The one who says, "I know Him," and does not keep His commands, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever guards His Word, truly the love of Elohim has been perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. The one that says he stays in Him ought to walk, even as He walked. (ISR 1st Yohanan 2:3-6)
I have met many people who confuse the fact that we are under grace and not under the law with not keeping the commandments yet if that were so we would have to throw out many verses like Matthew 5:17, Matthew 5:19, Matthew 5:28, Matthew 28:20, John 14:21, John 15:14, 1st Corinthians 7:12, 1st John 2:3-6, 1st John 3:20, Revelation 13:17, Revelation 14:12, Revelation 22:14, and many, many, more.
