If you want your Mbuna or any other African Cichlids to be happy and healthy, you will need to supply your Mbuna with the proper size Aquarium. The fish-tank should be no less than 48" (four feet long). Anything less than that would be "cruel and unusual punishment" for your Mbuna. Anything from a 60 Gallon Aquarium to a 300 Gallon Aquarium would be good, the bigger the better.
Although a 55 Gallon Show Tank is also 48" long, it is not the same as a 60 Gallon Regular Tank sometimes known as a 60 Gallon Breeder Tank. The 55 Gallon Aquarium will work but the 60 Gallon is much better, not for the extra 5 Gallons but for the usable area. Your Mbuna spend more than 80% of their time in the bottom 12 inches of the aquarium.
The 55 Gallon Tank measures 48x13x20 but the actual usable area measures 48x13x12 that gives you 7488 cubic inches of usable space. However, the 60 Gallon Tank measures 48x15x18 and the actual usable space measures 48x15x12 which gives you 8640 cubic inches of usable space. In reality, a 60 Gallon Aquarium will give you over one-thousand more cubic inches of usable space over a 55 Gallon Aquarium.
